Formatters / LOCAL TOOL

YAML Formatter

Format and validate YAML locally while retaining YAML-specific syntax.

Runs locally — input is never uploaded
Paste or type YAML

WHAT IT DOES

Keep YAML's indentation and its meaning in view.

Format YAML locally with a parser that understands mappings, sequences, quoted and multiline scalars, comments, anchors, aliases, and documents. Formatting also validates the source before replacing it in the editor.

Why use it?

Use it to tidy YAML source while retaining YAML-specific constructs that a conversion through JSON may lose.

How to use this tool

  1. Paste the YAML and format it, correcting syntax errors reported by the parser.
  2. Review indentation, multiline values, comments, and anchors in the rewritten document.
  3. Check it with the application that consumes it before deployment. Syntactically valid YAML can still contain an invalid workflow, manifest, or service configuration.

Details and limitations

  • Prettier's YAML parser is bundled locally and is used for formatting rather than converting the document through JSON, so YAML-only constructs are not intentionally discarded.
  • Comments, anchors, aliases, block scalars, flow collections, and document markers remain part of the YAML source when the parser supports them.
  • The result is formatted YAML, not a schema or Kubernetes validation report; application-specific tags and custom schemas may still need the target toolchain.

COMMON QUESTIONS

YAML Formatter questions

Are comments and anchors preserved?
The bundled YAML parser and printer retain supported YAML comments, anchors, aliases, block scalars, and document structure. Custom tags or schema-specific extensions may be reported as unsupported rather than silently rewritten.
Does formatting validate my application's YAML schema?
No. It validates YAML syntax and formats the document; Kubernetes, CI, Compose, and application schemas need their own validators.
