WHAT IT DOES

Recover individual frames from an existing regular atlas.

Choose cell width and height, outer margin, and the spacing between cells. The slicer reads the grid left to right, then top to bottom. Preview a selected range as an animation and export each cell as a PNG without resizing its pixels. The ZIP also contains the original frame coordinates so the extraction can be checked.

Why use it?

A regular-grid atlas may need to become individual frames for another editor or engine. Slicing with explicit cell geometry avoids rescaling or guessing the boundaries.

How to use this tool

  1. Load the PNG sheet or try the demo.
  2. Set its cell dimensions, outer margin, spacing, and the frame range to extract; review the selected grid and playback.
  3. Export the frames and coordinates as a ZIP. For an irregular packed atlas, use its layout metadata instead of assuming every cell has the same size.

Details and limitations

  • PNG input is checked before decoding: up to 10 MiB, 8192 pixels per side, and 16 megapixels total.
  • Select at most 512 frames. A count of zero means all remaining cells from the chosen zero-based starting frame.
  • Unused edge pixels are reported, not stretched into the cells. Preview grid lines are never included in the exported images.
  • This tool slices regular grids only. It does not infer trimmed, rotated, or irregularly packed rectangles from an image.

WORKED EXAMPLES

Recover four frames without rescaling their pixels

Choose the slicer's demo, which supplies a regular four-cell row. Inspect its playback and export the selected frames as a ZIP.

Expected result

Four 64 × 64px PNG frames plus frames.json. Grid overlays are absent from the exported images. An irregularly packed or rotated atlas needs layout metadata; guessing a uniform grid will crop the wrong regions.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Sprite Slicer questions

Does it preserve transparency?
Yes. Frames are exported as PNG with the source alpha channel; no background is added.
Can I extract just one animation row?
Set the first frame to the row's zero-based offset and frame count to the number of cells in that row. Playback follows the selected cells in row-major order.
Can it unpack a tightly packed atlas?
Not automatically. This version requires a regular grid with consistent cell dimensions, margin, and spacing.
