SQL Formatter

Format SQL queries locally while preserving strings, comments, and parameters.

Runs locally — input is never uploaded
Paste or type SQL

WHAT IT DOES

Give complex queries a shape you can review.

Format SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CTE, join, CASE, and nested SQL locally with a dialect-aware formatter. Choose Generic SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, or SQL Server without executing the query or connecting to a database.

Why use it?

Use it to expose the structure of a query during review without connecting to a database or running the statement.

How to use this tool

  1. Paste the SQL and select the dialect used by the destination database.
  2. Format and inspect joins, conditions, and nested clauses. For example, layout can make a missing WHERE easier to notice but cannot decide whether an update is safe.
  3. Validate and test the query separately against an appropriate database environment; formatting is not execution or schema checking.

Details and limitations

  • The dialect picker changes formatting grammar and keyword handling only; it never runs a parser against a server or validates schema names.
  • Strings, quoted identifiers, comments, placeholders, nested queries, CTEs, joins, and CASE expressions stay in the query passed to the local formatter.
  • This is a formatter, not a SQL linter or database client. A syntactically accepted query can still be invalid for a particular schema or engine version.

COMMON QUESTIONS

SQL Formatter questions

Which SQL dialects are available?
Generic SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, and SQL Server are backed by the bundled sql-formatter dialects. The picker changes the formatter grammar; it does not connect to a database.
Does this validate my database query?
It formats the query and catches formatter-level syntax problems, but it does not know your schema, permissions, extensions, or server version.
